What is the Critical Zone in the context of the New Climatic Regime? How have scientific research and the perception of landscapes changed with the introduction of this new concept? The Critical Zone, only a few kilometers thick, constitutes the only region of the Earth that has been transformed by life over an extremely long period of time. It is also the only part of the world that we can directly perceive through our senses. Although human activity is almost imperceptible on a planetary scale, it has profoundly disruptive effects within this thin, fragile, and highly complex critical zone. The Critical Zone is a concept developed by Earth scientists to connect many different disciplines. How might the practice of architecture change in response to this ongoing transformation? What are Critical Zone Observatories, and how can they become components of a new landscape? This book explores these questions through the case study of the Santo Pietro Woodlands in Caltagirone, selected for their uniqueness: a municipally owned area dedicated to common-use rights, characterized by cork oak forests and other ecosystems intertwined with a range of agricultural activities.
